Our 911 call

So we spent our 4Th of July weekend at home building a fence. Johnny of course did most of the work but I did get out there and helped for a few hours. On Tuesday Johnny went to work but came early because they shut down the computers. He figured he couldn't do anything productive at work, so he might as well do something productive at home.

So as Johnny and I were working on the fence and getting ready to nail the last few boards, our cousin Juan pulled up. We were talking and I noticed some smoke in the field across the street. A few hours earlier I noticed the farmer on his tractor over there working, so I asked the guys if they thought that was a controlled burn. They both said yes, but I was not so sure since I could see the flames and it was getting big fast. Then we saw some boys walking away from it very quickly. I ran for the phone to call 911 while Juan got in his car to talk to those boys.
This picture is about 3 minutes before the firetruck got there.

Our heroes arrive. To my surprise they weren't hurrying like I thought they would be since it was getting awfully close to the street and if it jumped it would put our houses in danger. They controlled it but let it burn a little. Luckily the farmer's field was not burned at all and our houses were safe.

Not the best picture, but this is the after burn view from my bedroom window. When the firemen arrived we told one of them that we talked to the boys who may have started it, and they told us the cops would come talk to us. I was so surprised that no one did. They had my name and number through the 911 operator. The boys said they didn't start it but saw the boys who did. They even gave Juan their names and addresses. Were they telling the truth? Who knows, and I guess we will never find out.

I am so grateful that Johnny decided to come home because I wouldn't have been outside at that time of day. Most people on my street were out of town and we were the only people outside. I think the Lord had better plans for us this day.
